Nailed it! SpaRitual
When my nails are freshly manicured, it somehow makes me feel more, well, polished. I hate walking out of poorly ventilated shops with a headache though. We all know that the ingredients in traditional polish is not good to inhale on a regular basis, but we slather it on anyway - guilty! I am totally guilty…
Until recently when I discovered the SpaRitual line at a little body shop, called Mountain Body, in Park City, Utah. With flavors like, Strawberry Fields Forever and Paradigm Shift (which I am currently admiring as I type!), you not only feel good about wearing the nail lacquer but empowered.
All the more so, because this line is made with organic and Vegan ingredients and DBP-free. Dibutyl phthalate has been banned in Europe for being linked to birth defects.

Courtney, DBP is not the only serious toxin in nail polish - consumers also need to beware of toluene and formaldehyde, both prevalent in most conventional nail polish (you might be worth another look at the label of the Spa Ritual polish to make sure it also doesn’t have these ingredients)
I posted on this a while ago but Zoya is an amazing alternative to conventional polish as well with over 60 fashion forward colors, non of the above toxins and it’s just been voted longest wearing nail polish by Womens Health Magazine and a panel of 48 beauty pros…
Yes, I am very aware of the other ingredients considered to be harmful in nail polish. There are a growing number of alternatives to traditional lines, such as Essie and OPI, but not all products are free of all of the chemicals. Below is what SpaRitual has to say about DBP, Tolulene and Formaldehyde in their products. Another alternative I am checking out is Acquarella, a water-based line - stay tuned for that review!
Ingredients Sourced With Awareness
Q: Do SpaRitual Products contain DBP? A: No. SpaRitual is the first professional vegan nail care line that is 100% DBP-free.
Q: What is formaldehyde and does it exist in SpaRitual products? A: SpaRitual does not use formaldehyde in our nail lacquers and treatments, but instead uses tosylamide/formaldehyde resin which is synthesized with 0.3% formaldehyde. This finished resin is washed thoroughly to eliminate any residual formaldehyde, and technically carries only trace amounts of formaldehyde.
Q: Should I be worried about toluene? A: Toluene is a solvent that has been used in nail lacquers for many decades. After toluene interacts with the polish resins, it evaporates, leaving a uniquely smooth and durable nail lacquer coat. Toluene is considered a safe ingredient. As a matter of fact, a recent study of toluene levels in the air in nail spas and salon conducted by an independent lab, (not by the beauty industry) showed that the toluene exposure was only 1/100th of the federal (OSHA) safe exposure level. In other words, the nail technician in the salon, applying nail care products all day, is only getting 0.5% of the amount of toluene that is considered a dangerous level. And the exposure for salon or spa consumer is significantly less.
Q: Do SpaRitual Products contain toluene? A: SpaRitual continually strives to provide the safest and most effective nail care products in the industry. After significant research and weighing the facts we decided that the elimination of toluene from SpaRitual Nail Lacquers would not improve the safety of our products, and would be adversely affect the performance of the line. We did, however, locate a safe, effective alternative for toluene when we developed the line of SpaRitual Nail Elixirs and therefore, do not use toluene in our nail treatment products.
Hi Courtney! It’s Emi! I have some exciting news! As of the beginning of this year, SpaRitual is COMPLETELY free of any traces of Touluene, Formaldehyde and of course, as you said, DBP.
Also the brand uses “recycled” glass instead of just “recyclable” (which accounts for most glass anyway!) and uses water-eco-friendly soy-based ink instead of regular ink! And, any paper used on marketing/sales/shipping and packaging are all FSC-certified paper.
Wonderful, right!?
Amazing news!
